Step-by-Step Installation Guide for Solid Black PVC Strip Curtains

Proper installation is key to maximising the performance of your RUBASIA PVC Strip Curtains. This detailed guide will walk you through the entire process, from measuring your doorway to hanging the final strip. Designed for durability in the Borneo climate, our curtains are a straightforward DIY project for facilities in Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei.

Before You Begin: Tools & Materials Required

Item

Description

RUBASIA PVC Strips

2mm thick, 200mm wide, sold by the meter.

Mounting Channel

Aluminium or steel U-channel (headrail).

End Caps

For the mounting channel (if required).

Power Drill

With appropriate drill bits for your wall material (concrete, steel, wood).

Screws & Wall Plugs

Suitable for fixing the channel to your structure.

Tape Measure

Spirit Level

Critical for ensuring the channel is straight.

Sharp Utility Knife/Scissors

For cutting the PVC strips to length.

Safety Glasses & Gloves

For protection during cutting and drilling.

Ladder

For safe access to the installation point.

Step 1: Measure the Installation Area

  1. Measure the Width: Measure the total width (A) of the doorway or opening where the curtains will be installed.
  2. Calculate Number of Strips: The strips are 200mm wide. To ensure proper overlap (typically 25-50%), you will need enough strips so that their total width is 125-150% of the opening width.
    • Formula: Number of Strips = (Opening Width (A) × 1.4) / 200mm
    • *Example: For a 2000mm (2m) wide door: (2000 × 1.4) / 200 = 14 strips required.*
  3. Measure the Drop Length: Measure the height (B) from the top of the opening to the desired finishing point (usually just above floor level). Add 50-100mm to this measurement to allow for the strip to be hooked into the channel.
    • Strip Cutting Length = Drop Length (B) + 75mm

Step 2: Prepare the Mounting Channel

  1. Cut the Channel: Using a hacksaw, cut the aluminium mounting channel to match the total width (A) of your opening.
  2. Mark Drill Points: Place the channel on a stable surface. Mark drilling holes along its length, approximately every 300-400mm, ensuring they are centred.

Step 3: Mount the Channel

THIS IS THE MOST CRITICAL STEP FOR A PROFESSIONAL RESULT.

  1. Position the Channel: Hold the channel in place above the doorway. Ensure it is centred.
  2. Check for Level: Use your spirit level to ensure the channel is perfectly horizontal. An unlevel channel will cause strips to hang unevenly.
  3. Mark the Wall: Once level, mark the drilling points through the holes in the channel onto the wall or lintel.
  4. Drill Pilot Holes: Drill pilot holes at the marked points using the appropriate drill bit for your wall material (e.g., masonry bit for concrete).
  5. Insert Wall Plugs: If drilling into brick or concrete, insert wall plugs into the holes.
  6. Secure the Channel: Align the channel with the pilot holes and secure it firmly using screws. Do not over-tighten, as this can warp the channel. Ensure it remains level throughout.

Step 4: Cut the PVC Strips to Length

  1. Lay Out a Strip: Lay a single PVC strip on a clean, flat, protected surface.
  2. Measure and Mark: Using your tape measure, mark the required Cutting Length (from Step 1) on the strip.
  3. Cut the Strip: Using a sharp utility knife or heavy-duty scissors, cut the strip straight across. A straight edge or square can help ensure a perfect 90-degree cut.
  4. Repeat: Cut all required strips to the same length.

Step 5: Install the Strips into the Channel

  1. Start from One End: Begin inserting strips at one end of the channel.
  2. Insertion Method: Fold the top of the strip over (like a taco) and push it up into the channel. Once inside, it will unfold and lock into place. You should feel it snap in.
  3. Overlap the Strips: As you add each subsequent strip, ensure it overlaps the previous one by 25-50mm. This overlapping is essential for creating an effective seal. The standard 200mm width is designed for this.
  4. Continue Across: Work your way across the entire channel until it is full.

Step 6: Final Checks and Adjustments

  1. Check Alignment: Once all strips are installed, gently run your hand across them to ensure they are overlapping consistently and hanging freely.
  2. Test the Passage: Walk through the curtains several times. They should part easily and swing back into place seamlessly, re-forming the barrier.
  3. Trim if Necessary: If any strips are uneven at the bottom, you can trim them for a neat finish. It's best to do this after they have been hanging for a few hours, as they can naturally stretch.

Pro-Tips for Installation in Borneo's Climate:

  • For High-Traffic Areas: In busy loading bays in Bintulu or Kuching, consider installing a kicker bar or guide ropes at waist height to prevent forklifts from catching the strips and to encourage a clean part-down-the-middle.
  • For Very Wide Doorways: For extra stability on wide openings in Brunei or Kota Kinabalu factories, ensure the mounting channel is supported by brackets along its length to prevent sagging.
  • Cleaning: The curtains can be easily cleaned with mild soap and water, which is useful for removing dust common in Sarawak's industrial areas.
